Recently, a friend shared a beautiful practice with me: each morning, she lights a candle to remind herself of her inner light. It’s her way of honoring that sacred part of herself that shines, no matter what life brings her way. In my own way, I have a similar reminder: etched permanently on my skin as a tattoo, a forever imprint to remind me that I, too, am light. Two different expressions, one shared theme. She is light, I am light, and you, my friend, are also light.
The act of lighting a candle each day resonates deeply with the wisdom found in Yoga Sutra 1.36, which encourages us to contemplate the inner light that is free from sorrow. It’s more than just a symbolic gesture. Each flicker of the flame becomes a mindful ritual. A moment of pause and reflection, reminding us that beneath the layers of life’s challenges and busyness, our inner light remains constant.
Nurturing the Flame Within
Life has a way of dimming our awareness of this inner brilliance. The demands, the stress, the endless to-dos can sometimes make us forget that this light is always within us, waiting to guide us through even the darkest moments. But lighting that candle each day serves as a powerful reminder: like a flame, our inner light can grow, flicker, and shine brightly again.
It’s also a practice of connection. Not just to ourselves but to those around us. Just as a candle can light another without losing its own brightness, we can offer warmth, compassion, and kindness to others without diminishing our own strength. Through our actions, words, and presence, we share our light, illuminating the world around us, one interaction at a time.
Creating a Grounding Ritual
Incorporating this simple practice into your daily life can be transformative. Whether it’s in the quiet of the morning to set your intentions for the day ahead or at night to reflect and find peace, lighting a candle can become a grounding ritual. It reminds us that we have the power to navigate life’s ups and downs with grace and resilience, because that strength, that brilliance, is already within us.
Taking Your Practice Deeper
For those who want to take this ritual a step further, consider integrating it into your meditation practice. Candle gazing, or trataka, can deepen your connection to this inner light. After lighting your candle, find a comfortable seat and softly gaze at the flame. Let your eyes gently focus on the flickering light, using it as an anchor to still your mind. As you breathe deeply, visualize that the light of the candle and your inner light are one and the same. Radiating warmth, peace, and infinite potential.
Just like that flickering flame, your inner light is always there—strong, steady, and capable of illuminating even the darkest moments. So, as you light your candle each day, know that you are also rekindling the flame within yourself. And remember, this light is not just for you, it’s meant to be shared.
Sharing Your Light with the World
In sharing our inner light, we create ripples of positivity and connection. Whether through a kind word, a compassionate gesture, or simply by being present, we can help light the way for others. And as we do, we strengthen our own light in the process.
So, the next time you light a candle, whether it’s part of your morning routine, a calming evening ritual, or a moment of meditation, remember the power of that simple act. You are light. You are capable of illuminating the world around you, and your light is needed now more than ever. Keep shining.
